Ranj Dhaliwal on winning temple slate

Author of Daaku is new vice-president of Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Surrey

2008.11.23 — Ranj Dhaliwal, author of the 2006 gangster novel Daaku, was part of a slate of younger, baptized Sikhs that swept the November 23 executive election at the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Surrey.

The new executive, led by Amardeep Singh, states that it intends to use its victory to steer younger Indo-Canadians away from gangs and violence.

Published in late 2006 by New Star Books, Daaku is a powerful portrait of the world of Indo-Canadian gangsters, and hints at a complicated relationship between criminal activities and temple politics in the past. Its gritty and realistic portrayal of “The Life” has made it a local bestseller.
