Peter Desbarats on Asper Nation in new LRC

Dean of Canadian journalism reviews Marc Edge?s CanWest study in tandem with ?confusing? Peter C Newman bio

2009.01.07 — The January/February issue of The Literary Review of Canada, which hits magazine racks this month, devotes two pages to Peter Desbarats’s review of two new books about the media empire built by Izzy Asper and now controlled by his offspring: Peter C Newman’s authorized bio, and Marc Edge’s Asper Nation: Canada’s Most Dangerous Media Company, published by New Star in 2007.

In his review Desbarats calls Edge “a news media researcher with a growing reputation,” and adds, “What Edge has produced, in effect, is a guide and interpretation to the voluminous archive of Izzy Asper’s multifaceted career.”

Marc Edge is the author of Pacific Press: The Unauthorized Story of Vancouver’s Newspaper Monopoly and Red Line, Blue Line, Bottom Line, a dissection of the NHL’s labour dispute that led to the present system of payroll caps and revenue sharing.
